Darkness Where There Should Be Light

Over the past few days I had a wonderful time of refreshing and healing. Last week I had inflamed an old injury which subsequently was causing much pain. Actually I was perfectly fine as long as I didn’t sit, stand, move or remain still. The trouble was that I had started to run short of options.

Since my original plans for Thanksgiving included a 4 hour drive to Lafayette, Louisiana to spend time in Cajun country it was time to modify my plans. I was initially disappointed since I had been dreaming of some seriously good cooking; I knew I needed a shorter journey. So at the last moment I changed my plans and opted for Brenham, Texas. Closer and a wonderfully relaxing and beautiful part of Texas, I always recommend Brenham as a great place to get away.

One of the things that I looked forward to was taking some night photography of several churches up in the surrounding countryside. There are a group of churches in the area that are each over a hundred years old. This is a great testimony to the founders and succeeding generations of each of these congregations. Well maintained, basic and rich in spiritual history. Additionally, I had discovered on the website for Washington County that these historic buildings are now part of lighted tour that can be viewed at night. I love night photography and prepared for the evenings shooting.

As I wound my way through the countryside and rolling hills I was soon disappointed to find darkened buildings where there should have been lighted buildings. This far out in the country combined with rain clouds moving in gave a new meaning to the word “dark.” On the rare occasions that I passed a farmhouse their lights stood out in brilliance. After a few more trips I conceded that the lighted tour was operating in “extreme green” mode. This was great for the ecology, saving energy and all, but leaving something to be desired as a night photo opportunity.

As I returned to the comfort of my hotel I began thinking of Matthew 5:16, Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” I could not help but think how even a limited amount of light on these buildings would have caused them to stand out for miles amidst the darkness. Then I began to think of how much more the truth of a godly life and witness stands out in a cold world of spiritual darkness.

As I prepared for sleep and pondered the many blessings we each have, I thought again of the power of light in the midst of darkness. As I move from a time of Thanksgiving to the Christmas season, I pray that each of us will be certain to let our light shine. May each of us not be a silent witness, but a bold and committed source of light wherever we are and wherever we travel.

What one thing can you do this week to shine for Christ?

God Is Close, But His Presence Is Omnipresent!

This morning our volunteers who come in and staff the prayer lines were unusually fired up as they arrived. Some of them had been on a mission trip out of the country and had just returned this week. They were well received and greatly used of God as the Gospel was received by many. They were especially impressed with night services to hear the old hymns of the faith sung out loud and strong, although not in a language they were used to. A subtle reminder to us all that God is omnipresent.

In spite of the bad choices we may be making as a nation I still believe that God’s protective hand is on us. I also believe we will be held accountable for our tremendous resources balanced against the many times we remain silent to share the gospel. Yet, what a blessing to be reminded that we don’t have exclusive use on God. He is ready to touch and honor His promises regardless of the language being spoken.

It is easy to get frustrated by “things” that go on in our day to day life. Let’s keep our hearts and minds focused on our God and the power of the gospel. Scott, one of the volunteers who just returned, shared that he and another man was trying to speak with a couple who wanted nothing to do with foreigners. However, in the hall way was a young woman who was ready and willing to hear about Christ. When the couple’s door closed in their face the young woman came over and asked to know about the gospel. Literally sometimes we face a closed door. We do well when we look around for those who are hungering for the gospel. Oh, and yes, she did accept Christ as Savior!

Our God remains as close as our hearts while still touching lives around the world. Thank you Lord.

We Are Literally Wearing The Light Out!

I have an isolated set of task lights in our call center at each workstation. These lights are wired to a separate power supply that is backed up on battery. These are set up in two strings to back-up the back-up. Perhaps that seems over prepared but when the volunteers are taking calls for prayer anything can and usually does happen.

Everything can be going fine until the calls start to come in. A chance to pray or lead someone to Christ and the AC warms instead of cools, the electricity fails or worse… we run out of coffee. So we keep fans, batteries and reserves of coffee just in case. This morning I just received a shipment of new lamps and bulbs. Why? Because our teams of faithful volunteers haven’t just worn the bulbs out, they have worn the lamps out. Don’t misunderstand; they do take care of things. However, just the sheer demands of handling calls at numerous times and occasions will take its toll on the basic necessities.

As a matter of simple common sense I open each lamp in my office and pre-test them before having them distributed and placed in position. This batch is a slightly different design and needed an extra moment to set up. I turned the rotating knob to test and instant disappointment. Yes, the light did come on, but it was dim. So dim that I knew this wouldn’t do the job for us. Frustrated I pulled the packing slips and started to call my order person to make arrangements to return boxes of lamps. As I did, I turned the knob so the bulb could cool down for repackaging. Of course that is when the lamp came up to full brightness. There are two settings on the new lamps, low and high.

Lesson learned? Yes of course test the obvious first, but more important a subtle reminder about believers. We all have access to the same power through the Spirit and the Word, but do we use it? Perhaps more important, are we perhaps sometimes guilty of being connected but running without accessing full power? We have our Bibles but do we read daily and commit passages to memory? We have local churches but are we really turning the knob to full power or are we coasting when we could be really passionately connected? Having salvation is running on low, sharing our faith is turning the switch to full; mentoring the one we lead to Christ might need a three way switch!

Ask yourself this question, what is some element in your life where you are ready to turn the knob to full power?

Don’t Let Cloudy People Steal Your Sunshine…

Have you ever noticed how many people can only see the negative? We are reminded in Scripture to praise the Lord, to think on what is of good report and be still and know that God is God. Why then is it so hard to do any of that when a coworker or manager, friend or family member is criticizing, complaining and generally trying to rob the sunshine from an otherwise blessed day?

Often the truth is that many people carry far too much emotional garbage. I can still recall a friend of mine that rarely traveled. When they did travel it looked more like moving day than vacation day. Every contingency had been allowed for. Every resource that “might be” needed had been packed or stowed and was dragged on the adventure. Most would never be used and sometimes didn’t survive the journey. In contrast I had a friend who traveled as part of his work. 20+ days of every month found him in transit, in airports, in rental cars or hotels. He rarely had more than one case. He carried what he needed and that was enough.

People with emotional garbage are carrying every memory, moment and muscle cramp from their past. They act like they will need it for the future. They don’t, they need the lessons not the luggage! The more they carry with them the more people they bump into and the more discomfort, pain and arguments that ensue. We each need to begin setting down and leaving behind us those things that caused us pain. They are not worth carrying with us, hurting us and hurting others.

The lessons we learn from painful moments are worth taking with us. They are and can become an emotional Ph.D. from the school of life. Best of all they can be a powerful tool to more beneficially deal with a future moment and a way to help others have victory over a bad moment. Why carry the luggage when you can carry the lessons?

Take a look at what you are feeling stressed over and ask yourself what lesson you can learn from it? Then look for someone overloaded with the emotional baggage and offer to help them lose some of the luggage.

Wow! How God Blessed!

This morning in our call center has been fabulous. We had 50% more volunteers come in to help with the calls. We were scrambling to get people seated. Then the calls began coming. A wonderful response by people who needed to know that there are those who care, and there are people who believe God, and best of all God will hear and act on our prayers. We are still getting calls right now so we are not able to count all the calls yet. However, I needed to stop long enough to praise God and ask for your prayers.

Pray for continued wisdom for those who are answering calls and praying with others. Pray that there will be a great harvest of souls. Pray that our volunteers will stay refreshed. Pray that we remain good stewards of such opportunities.

I am reminded of the Scripture in Psalm 18:33, “He maketh my feet like hinds’ feet, and setteth me upon my high places.” Oh how God blesses and uses our weaknesses to accomplish great things. He makes our movements agile so we can be where we can be used. He places us where we can have the opportunity to look at a great distance and see some of the many ways He is working in the lives of people. He does give us feet that can move and a high perspective. How awesome is our God and may He get the glory in all things.

Enjoying the storm that is outside!

Outside my office there is a fierce storm going on. Lots of lightening, thunder and yes, heavy rains. Great special effects, a typical summer time moment. Best of all my office is close enough to the outside to hear the sounds and even feel the vibration of the thunder. My office is also far enough inside the building to feel safe and secure amidst the storm.

I enjoy the moment because it reminds me so much of what it is like being a Christian in this life. Going through the storm is a little like being saved, we walk amidst the storms of life yet enjoy the peace that passes all understanding. We only have a right to feel scarred when we try to handle things on our own. Yet when we lean on our Lord and trust in His Word, the storms seem distant and the way becomes clear. I thank God that He is personal, faithful and involved in the day to day not just eternity.

By the way, prior to the storm hitting I went for a walk over to the Sanctuary. Here is a picture from my cell phone camera of the steeple just prior to the storm.

We Need To Learn To Listen... And To Act

I love it when a passage makes it so clear how God listens. In Mark 10:47-52 Jesus is coming to Jericho and along the road side are two blind men. They cry out to Jesus and other people tried to quite them. Yet, they still cried out and when they did the Bible says that Jesus stood still. Jesus paid attention to two men who called out in need and answered their cry for healing.

Things haven’t changed much. There are so many hurting people crying out and the world wants them to be silent and not disturb the status quo. Yet God listens and acts. What to me is most special is that He will work through you and me to meet the need. Sometimes the need is for prayer and the plan of salvation. Other times the need is a resource or a word of encouragement. Whatever the need, the fact that God will use us is a humbling thing. Let’s keep our ears open not only to hear the cry of those who are hurting, but to the leading of the Spirit of God when He directs us to act.

In Memory of My Father, Uncle and Dad...

I was blessed with a Father who was a great patriot. In many ways I could call him brilliant. Who was comfortable with coding and decoding, had served as an agent behind enemy lines during World War II, and was a pioneer in the birth and growth of computers. Yet, the war and the nature of his work took a terrible toll on his life. Not having accepted Jesus Christ as Savior, my Father had much strength but lacked the inner strength to stand against the stresses he had endured for so many years. My Father left when I was two years old.

Yet there is a man, who has since gone to be with the Lord, who called me son. God raised up another man who was never a part of our family. Who was married and raised his own children. Yet, still found the time to be a Dad to many generations of “Junior Boys” in Sunday school. I know that he touched many lives and I know that he impacted mind. After all the years he has been with the Lord it is difficult to type these lines without coming to tears. I greatly miss him and definitely remember him.

I was blessed with an Uncle who was a man of faith, culture and character. He blessed my life by setting a high standard of what a man should be. What I know of being a gentleman I learned and mirrored from his life. He served our country in many different ways. He served our family in many more ways. He was involved in the arts, sciences, diplomacy, and mastered many languages. The most unique thing about my Uncle was his inheritance. Until I became of age, my middle brother and I were listed on our Mother’s will to be raised and adopted by this Uncle. It was a comfort to child to know he was that loved.

My Father was a great patriot who willingly and without reservation gave his life and innermost thoughts for freedom and his country. My Uncle demonstrated culture and refinement that gave him a power in his voice without ever raising it. My Dad taught me compassion and the power of having a heart for God. I never saw my Father cry, yet I knew he had a depth of commitment to his country that could not be matched. I frequently saw my Dad weep for a soul that was lost or a young person who was going through a difficult time. I wrote letters to my Father that went unanswered. If I called my Uncle he was there for me. I never doubted that there was a day when my Dad was alive that I was not mentioned in his prayers.

I have been truly blessed. On this Father’s Day I realize that I have had both a Father, and a Dad. They just didn’t happen to be the same man. Yet, I have been blessed to pick up qualities and strength from my Father, my Uncle and my Dad. I would be wrong to grow bitter and as why I could not have been like others with both in one. If I have strength and character it stems from the devotion that God has instilled in me through a Godly, Mother, a Patriotic Father, and yes, a Godly Dad and Uncle. So when I come to Father’s Day I am not sad though I may weep from their physical absence. Instead I give thanks, and look for men of any age that need that simple word of encouragement and prayer that their Father’s may have forgotten or did not know how to share. I have lived long enough to want to be known as a cultured man of prayer and a Patriot who is not afraid to shed a tear and encourage others.

In memory of my Father, Thomas Joseph Lyons, my Uncle James Hudson Culver and my Dad, Guy Fuller, may each of you who read this note be blessed with such men in your lives. Further, a special note to single moms, from the time I was two years old my Mom raised four children. Most Father’s Day’s passed without the presence of Father, Uncle or Dad. So I decided to give my Mom both Mother’s Day and Father’s Day cards. When she tried to divert the card to my Father, I reminded her that I knew that it was she who was there for me all year long. From the age of nine I was aware that she was wearing two hats and I felt no lacking only gratitude for her love. If you are reading this and raising your children on your own, don’t be discouraged or feel you are falling short. God can do a great work through you in your children’s lives.

Lessons in Serving...

Religious people came to John the Baptist and asked, “Who art thou?” The religious often don’t recognize God’s messenger. We need to stay in the Word to recognize His word! The passage that this is from is John 1:19-34. I like this passage because it is full of lessons.

Vs 19, A reminder that simply being religious doesn’t guarantee you understand what God is doing.

Vs. 20, John the Baptist makes clear that he is not the Christ, he has many followers yet recognizes his place and demonstrates humility.

Vs 23, John understood His calling and stays on track, he is the voice carrying the message, he is not the message.

Vs 32, Continuing to serve, John is permitted to witness God at work!

Vs. 34, John knows how to witness, he testifies of what he personally has experienced, he didn’t argue or debate religion!

Lessons to learn and practice, living a life where God is glorified and Christ is lifted up allows the freedom for the Spirit of God to freely work in and through our lives.

God bless!

Confidence in God’s Ability to Work Through Us

Charles Spurgeon was a great preacher of the Gospel and a soul winner. This past week I have been reading afresh, one of his messages titled: “Soul Winning.” Among the many jewels to be found in this message I found this:

“The preacher himself wins souls, I believe, best, when he believes in the reality of his work, when he believes in instantaneous conversions. How can he expect God to do what he does not believe God will do? He succeeds best who expects conversion every time he preaches. According to his faith so shall it be done unto him. To be content without conversions is the surest way never to have them: to drive with a single aim entirely at the saving of souls is the surest method of usefulness.”

I agree with this statement for many reasons. The most obvious reason I agree is practical experience. When we try to share our faith or the simple plan of salvation in our own strength our adversary tends to persuade us, it’s not going to happen. This is more than a lack of faith; it is a loss of confidence. It is a loss in the confidence of our heavenly Father to do what He has done in the past. It can be a loss of confidence in us to be effective.
The reality is that God is faithful. God will bless our efforts in soul winning in a large part based on how much of the Scripture is in us and how much we lean on Him. It is after all His Word that God promised to bless. It is the Word of God working in us that can make us more confident, effective and yes, wise. After all, “he that winneth souls is wise (Proverbs 11:30.)

Yes I know that people have a free will and can reject the saving grace of God. However, it is our responsibility to go forward empowered and confident that God will give the victory. Doubt on our part reflects on the One we represent. Why would someone give their life to and trust for salvation, when it comes across that we seem to have our doubts. I chose to believe in God not only for salvation but also for soul winning.

Our confidence in God’s ability to work through us in soul winning will be seen in the person who needs the Savior. That confidence that God will touch others through us may well be the impetuous to see someone make a decision to follow Christ. May we always remain confident in Christ and may we be used of God in the marvelous area of soul winning!

It was a remarkable day... Let us not forget!

This is a remarkable weekend that is approaching. It is the day we celebrate the resurrection of our Lord.

It is a day that serves to remind us well of the ultimate sacrifice of love. I encourage you to take some time between now and this weekend to read Isaiah 53. This prophetical documentation of the crucifixion cannot help but to humble us. In the face of so great a love that would allow God to sacrifice His Son or for Jesus to take on not simply the physical pain but the repulsion of all sin on Him is more than I can comprehend. Although it is rarely mentioned, meditate on how this affected the Spirit of God, He who is the very example of compassion and comfort, to witness and experience what was done to Jesus the Christ.

As we face another opportunity to demonstrate our love for God by coming together to worship and serve, let us be both mindful and thankful for His great love. May God truly bless you this day and everyday as we seek to serve our Lord.

God bless,

Charles

God always hears us and responds - We are not alone!

Isaiah 59:1, “Behold, the LORD'S hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear:” I am so thankful that we have a personal God!

When we face difficult moments or feel the stresses of others who are in conflict with us it is very easy to feel alone. At such moments it is good to remember we have a personal God. I can recall times when it seemed there was no one on my side, I felt like whatever I would do just wouldn’t be enough. In the midst of that I found I called on God more than in others. He was and always will be there.

We need to remember that when we call on Christ in salvation a family connection comes into existence. Not just forgiveness, but a whole new relationship. From that moment forward rest assured, we are not alone. The warmth and presence of God is something tangible that will comfort our hearts, lift our spirits and take us from and through the darkest moments into the sunshine of peace.

His hand is not short that it cannot save us or his ear closed that it will not listen. He will not only hear our prayers, He will respond to our needs.

Broke-In, Not Broken…

Earlier this week I was blessed to be a part of a Creative Media Retreat. The work was hard but an incredible blessing. Then when I returned home, after being gone for two and half days, I found my home trashed and burgled. If you have been through this you know the feeling. If not, you can possibly imagine some of the emotions anyone would experience. Yet after a couple of days to look over my shoulder emotionally, I can see in some small way what God is doing in me.

He remains God and Lord of my life. “Things” regardless of how emotionally attached and significant from my past are things. Yes, my home was entered in my absence without my knowledge or consent. Items, books, clothing, tables, chairs, even food from the refrigerator and so much more were thrown about and trashed. Mementos of a loved one were stolen. A since of violation and loss of safety has been experienced.

Yet, through all of this I am becoming more keenly aware of the fact that my home was broken in to, but I am not broken. I am still able to serve the ministry as I was while the intrusion was taking place. God was faithful to spare me the moment and now helps me in the recovery. In all likelihood the things stolen will remain that way, but God’s presence is as sweet and comforting as ever. The things stolen I was able to enjoy for a time and retain in my memory.

The greatest gift I have received is the comfort and compassion of God in my life. That is stored in a place where thieves cannot enter or destroy. The thieves will be held accountable of their actions just as I will be held accountable of my reaction. I chose to trust God, pick up the pieces and go forward serving wherever God will use me. Don’t waste the time we have. God’s service and sustaining grace is the absolute best!

Remember, it is bad enough to be broken in to, don’t fall into the enemies trap and become broken!

Matthew 6:19-21

“Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.”

Creative Media Retreat at Iron Horse Ranch…

It was hard work, it was great work, it was a special time. Two days at a 2,000 acre ranch in the rolling hills of Texas is a special place to be. The Iron Horse Ranch is a wonderful facility to stay in and strategize from. In addition, we were able to move out and explore and do team building over rough terrain. Lots of fresh ideas were inspired by the fresh air, incredible surroundings and the blessing of sharing goals with others with a passion to serve God.

Although this was a working time that we spent at the ranch, we came back recharged and revitalized. Being out of range for the cell phones may have been an advantage. You can get more done with God when the phone can’t ring! We were given this unique and special opportunity by someone who cared and shared our vision. Wherever God takes you, take advantage of that moment and find what He wants to share with you.

Seven Powerful Strengths To Incorporate!

Yesterday I came across two interesting articles in the Wall Street Journal. Some of the things that made the articles interesting were their placement and their opposing content. The articles appeared across from each other. On the left page was an article about how more people are feeling hopeless in the job market, no future and no hope. On the right page there was an article about a man who grew up with wealth. However, this person’s father made it clear that he had to make serious choices and created balanced motivation to make choices about his future. The man had wealth, but his the son was still made to face tough choices. These choices he made and although he went in a direction that his father had not, he is a success and seems positive and optimistic about the future.

Two articles and two representatives of attitudes in stark contrast are present in the paper each within view just look left and right. We are each faced with similar choices every day. Each day we make powerful but often undervalued decisions that move us closer to brilliance and success or frustration. The resources available are far less significant than the attitude.

Yesterday I was blessed to spend two hours of time in a meeting. Some would dread a two hour meeting. I found excitement in that meeting. Why? Because although I felt I brought something to the meeting, the best asset I brought was a spirit to learn. Those I met with are strong in their respective fields of influence. I was blessed to share but also to learn and glean knowledge and understanding from some sharp people. I believe if you want to succeed and move forward there is some basic strength we should each develop and follow after. Please consider this short list of seven powerful strengths or traits we should incorporate into our lives and character.

1. We become those we are around – so associate up! The truth is that we are influenced by those we associate with. We pick-up the language as easy from a defeated negative person as we do from a passionate articulate goal setter. Who do you prefer to become?

2. We learn when we take personal accountability to read! There is a constant barrage around us of music good and bad, conversation encouraging and demoralizing and distractions of every sort. Are you a reader? Do you make a conscious effort to find good books by great authors that inspire, encourage and teach you things that will lift you up and make you an asset to your realm of influence? A book a month is not difficult once you commit.

3. We are better when we present ourselves better! If you slouch, you come across and even sound like all your energy is gone. If you don’t wear clean clothes you present yourself and begin to act like less of a person than you are. Little changes make big changes in your presentation and who you are becoming. Dress down you will go down, dress up you move up and change the atmosphere of those around you. You don’t have to spend a fortune to dress up. But the days of casual Fridays have impacted the other six days of the week. Raise the standard.

4. We can control our thoughts and what leaves our lips! No, the devil doesn’t make you do it… he leads you if you let him. Stop letting him lead. The Bible says that as we think in our heart we become. So as we read and expose our eyes and ears to information, expose our hearts to only the best. When we control what we take into our thoughts our language will improve and be an encouragement to others.

5. We can lift others up and with so little effort! A word of encouragement is greatly appreciated when you are down. A handwritten letter – not to be confused with an email means something. A smile for a person who has not seen one in a while impacts them. Make an effort to encourage someone each and every day, make it a habit. Make the person who serves us feel like the honored guest and you will not be diminished, you will be appreciated.

6. We are each just as human as the poorest person on the street – connect! We are too often tempted to look away and not make any contact with a homeless person or beggar on the street. That person may have succumbed to a set of circumstances that we have just barely missed. They may not have prepared sufficiently to have risen above the moment. But that is not reason to treat them as less than human. Eye contact will not hurt us and a simple word of encouragement costs you only a moment.

7. We look for God in the moments of “more than a coincidence” and start with God first! If we begin each day with God rather than just trying to fit Him into our schedules latter we will be the one to benefit. God’s wisdom in our hearts and minds can stir us to victory and compassion. Those “more than a coincidence” moments when God intervenes in our day are more special than those around us will ever appreciate. Take the time to look and appreciate what God is doing in your life.

Coming From a Blessing to a Blessing!

This past weekend I was blessed to be a part of the American Christian Writer’s conference in Dallas, Texas. There is something special about being with creative people. This is especially true when their focus is on taking a talent like writing and finding ways to use it to God’s glory. One of the growing areas in Christian writing is Christian Fiction. Stories with strength, lessons about life, and a realistic view of how God works in situations are being written by writers of diverse cultures and background. I had the opportunity to speak with some sci-fi writers with a Christian focus, a unique and special area of interest.

People may enjoy reading great books; they may not appreciate the labor of love that goes on in the writing and marketing of books. This conference brought in some of the best teachers, established authors and editors to do the teaching. We, the writers, were hungry for practical sound teaching and we were blessed. In addition the fellowship was great to find others with similar struggles and challenges, questions and unique ways of bringing inspiration and ink together.

It was a great to be at the ACW Writer’s Conference. However, it is also good to be back home. In my absence a great team continued to keep touching lives and seeing people saved. Praise God for people of faith who support you in so many different ways. One of the wonderful ways we can feel God’s hand is in our work is when we are not the only ones working; God is working through the lives of those around us.

May all of us seek to live a life that is “approved.”

What a special blessing this week, we experienced 8 men ordained into the Gospel Ministry! To make and follow through on such a decision to serve God and His people is truly humbling. Let me take a moment and share a quote from Donald Barnhouse concerning the word, “approved:”

“In the ancient world there was no banking system as we know it today, and no paper money. All money was made from metal, heated until liquid, poured into moulds and allowed to cool. When the coins were cooled, it was necessary to smooth off the uneven edges. The coins were comparatively soft and of course many people shaved them closely. In one century, more than eighty laws were passed in Athens, to stop the practice of shaving down the coins then in circulation. But some money changers were men of integrity, who would accept no counterfeit money. They were men of honor who put only genuine full weighted money into circulation. Such men were called "dokimos" or "approved." Donald Barnhouse

This little history lesson has a purpose. When the ordination was held the men were reminded of the Scripture verse, II Timothy 2:15 which read:

“Study to shew theyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”

These men who were ordained and committed to the Gospel this week were challenged to study and show themselves to be “approved” unto God. Their lives need to match their commitment. These men are and will by God’s grace continue to be men of honor before God and men. Please take a moment to pray for our Christian leaders and especially the new Pastors and their wives who commit themselves to a life of significance and commitment. May they and all of us seek to live a life that is “approved.”

Today is Texas Independence Day

While the Alamo was under siege, The Texas Declaration of Independence was signed in Washington on the Brazos, March 2, 1836. Today is Texas Independence Day.

While one group of patriots fought bravely against greatly outnumbered and better equipped forces attacking the Alamo others fought a different kind of war. The battle for words to clearly say to the world, Texas values, will stand for, will live and die for freedom and independence. Lives at the Alamo were sacrificed. Yet the ripple that spread across Texas stirred the power of patriotism and courage that swells with pride the hearts of Texans to this day.

As a believer in Jesus Christ I am stirred with a different kind of emotion. Our stand took place at Calvary. We were surrounded by the binding cords of sin. It would take a sinless sacrifice to give us our freedom. We could not do it ourselves. Christ didn’t just go to the cross, He went to the grave and resurrected from that grave. Victory was achieved and we were granted forgiveness. To those who call on Christ as Savior are given the Freedom of forgiveness. The gift is still available and the ripple of freedom in Christ is still known today.

Today is Texas Independence Day, freedom is great – Freedom in Christ is best!

Three Important Lessons about Prayer…

Yes I know that there are many aspects to prayer. Many lessons to be learned, and yet some things can be distilled down to basic necessity level.

From my time as a child unto the moment she went to be with the Lord I have been impressed with my Mother’s prayer life. She didn’t just pray, she knew how to communicate. She didn’t just ask God for stuff, she knew how to rely on God. It seems like she understood and valued the “personal” in personal relationship with Jesus Christ her Savior. With all the struggles she encountered raising us four children on her own; she did some powerful teaching with her life. Through her prayer life I learned some great lessons that I have tried to keep portable – something that I could take with me. Although there were many wonderful lessons, let me share three for now:

First, there are three persons in the Godhead, treat them like persons…

Matthew 28:19 gives us what is known as the great commission, “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost." Three persons but just one God. God gave us personalities and desired to have this wonderful relationship with us. Although I have a profound respect and humility regarding the holiness of God, that respect does not keep me at a distance.

He is the one that began the relationship by His sacrifice at Calvary. I responded to salvation, but that’s only part of it. I want to know Him and that starts with a belief that He, God, is knowable. So I treat God as God but also as a person that I can be personable with and share those things that are on my heart. How I feel, the things that trouble me, the things I need and also the things I find amazing, beautiful and fascinating.

Second, keep it a two way conversation, read the Bible first and last…

People seem to grasp the idea that praying is talking to God. Although for most there seems to be more asking for stuff than genuine communication going on. Stop and think about this for a moment, if someone you loved, you might even say “so loved” only came to you when they wanted something, how would you feel? What if when they came to you they did open up about what was on their heart or things going on in their life, but monopolized the conversation never gave you a chance to speak. How would you feel?

When we limit our conversation with God to a one way conversation – only we do the talking, we are losing out on fellowship and communication. Try this the next time you want to spend time with God, make it a two way conversation. First, remember the command, “Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heather, I will be exalted in the earth.” Psalms 46:10. Sometimes when we want to communicate with God we just have to stop and listen in earnest quietness. Yet most important, before we begin praying, read the Bible, when finish praying, read the Bible. Since the Bible is God’s Word, what better way to let Him speak than to read what He has to say – His Word?

Finally, follow up with God, don’t ask once and then forget it!

Spend time with God in whatever you are doing. Driving down the road? Talk with God, after all you have the time to yourself and besides, you may get a ticket for texting or calling on the cell phone, but I never heard of someone getting a ticket for praying.

Also, keep a prayer list. Pray about what you are taking to God and continue to pray until you have the answer. Then when the answer comes, write down how God answered. I have often observed that God rarely answers just like I asked – He almost always improves on the request. I get more than what I asked for. Not when I asked for it – but at the perfect moment.

One final thing about a prayer list with completed dates, when you are tired or feeling low, go to the list and read for encouragement. Few things feel as good as looking over a list of prayer requests and realizing how incredibly God has answered in your life and those around you. To realize the timing and wisdom of God in the people He brought into your life, moved out of your life and resources that came into play meet your need.

God is personal and wants to spend time with us – but He honors our free will. He will not monopolize the conversation, but how much better it is stop, be still and listen for God. Finally, it is exciting to be consistent in our requesting and talking with God, especially when we step back, realize what He has done and give Him the praise!

Capture The Morning... Act On Your Vision!

I really do enjoy spending time with people who have vision and are prepared to act on their vision. I was blessed yesterday to spend some time with a doctor and an Assistant District Attorney. Their vision: to touch the lives of orphan children. They are in the process of putting together a non-profit organization to build, fund and run an orphanage.

Sure, they could complain about the problems of children without parents or homeless or even overcrowded conditions in state run organizations. Instead they are taking personal responsibility to make a difference. It will not take time from their busy schedules. It will not take it, because it is time that they are willingly giving.

This is a great lesson for all of us, the strength of giving of ourselves. It is important to count the cost before we commit to a project. However, if we focus on what it takes alone, we miss the blessing of giving. The focus is not money, stuff or time. The focus is allowing God to move through us and find where we can serve and touch lives. Whatever talent or gifts we feel we have, using them to the glory of God will at some point end up allowing us to touch lives in ways we could barely dream of.

Let us always practice not letting the business of the day take our time. We can recapture the most precious of moments when we chose where the time is spent. Capture the morning and spend it reading God’s Word first and praying. The rest of the day will be more manageable when reflect what and where God wants us and then taking our time and talents and going there.

The Ability to Go Through Much...

I just finished reading a letter from a man that had lots of major tragedies in his life. They span from his time as a child to his time now as an adult. From family to disease, he has a carried a load that most of his would have felt burdened down from any one individually. Yet he finished his first page with a statement of pure confidence in his ability to relate to God, understand His Word, and His appreciation of others in ministry who had been a blessing to him. He then continued on for another page requesting prayer for others, not he.

That to me is a profound example of the grace of God in a person’s life. The ability to go through so much negativity, pain and hurt and yet see God at work in his own life is a testimony to the man’s character and to the God he serves. This is faith that not only sustains; it is a faith that lays the foundation for a powerful testimony. It is not that you have to go through great hurt to have a great testimony. It is that you have to lean on God in the hurt, in the joy, in the sunshine and the rain that comes.

Each of us has the opportunity to turn our difficult moments into “Sonshine moments.” We have to simply keep our focus not on us, not on the events but on the Savior we love, serve and praise. He has redeemed us, once for all. It is a blessing to praise Him. Psalm 16:11, “Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fullness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.”

Where Are You - If Your Not There?

While having breakfast at a restaurant this morning I encountered a question and answer that gave me food for thought. A couple came into the restaurant and immediately walked back to the table area by-passing the hostess who does the seating. The woman walked up to what was presumably her preferred waitress and asked where she was. The waitress responded by pointing across the room and stating clearly, “I’m over there.” The woman responded positively and the couple went over and sat down at the table that the waitress had pointed to.

Perhaps this brief communication would not puzzle you. However, I confess a brief moment of confusion at the thought that when asked where a person was that you could clearly see followed by a response of pointing to a totally different area then where the person was standing made me wonder if there had been a brief shift in the time space continuum. OK, perhaps I’m overreacting to a simple question, but it did get me to thinking.

How many times do people ask questions and receive answers that obviously are not right and yet go ahead and act on it. The waitress was clearly not across the room, even if she was assigned to wait on that table that she pointed to. More often though, how often do we ask leaders about their beliefs or positions on matters, are given their answer and act on it… even when we know their reputation does not support it?

When we speak of politicians many people make their voting decision based on public sound bites. These are cleverly worded statements often scripted by speech writers and delivered by people who have them in memory if not their hearts. How often do we reach our decision based on the sound bite rather than the person’s record?

Of greater concern to me is our own personal integrity. Over time we develop a reputation, in our families, in the workplace and yes even in church. I wonder are we careful enough to rely on our reputation backing up our words or do we rely too much on an easy going character and smile. If so, are we any better than the politician? If we are to be someone who will have the respect of our families, coworkers and friends, our actions need to accurately reflect and support our words.

We are often quick to judge public figures. They can make a mistake and reporters and the public quickly attack. Yet for our own shortcomings we want lots of patience and lots of grace. Why not take the first step by walking a consistent walk of integrity. When our family, friends and coworkers want to know, “where we are” on an issue or how we feel about something, our actions should be the same place our words are. This is a special facet of integrity. Not just saying the right words but living the right words.

Let’s make sure people can see where we are and not have to rely on our words only. Remember Titus 1:16 KJV, “They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.”

Olympic Courage…

Most people I have encountered this past week have been pretty much obsessed with the Olympics. In fairness it is a global event that has a rich and long heritage. People and nations prepare long and hard to be ready to test their standings not only against their personal best – but against some of the world’s best athletes.

Don’t misunderstand what I am about to say as I have nothing against the Olympic Games. I have even been blessed to know a few athletes of that standing and yes, I was impressed with their talent and commitment. My only comment is one of perspective.

While the world watched in awe of skiers on Saturday many, yet a smaller crowd than those watching the Olympics, stood in respect for a young man at my church. While many listened for the announcements of scores… we listened to the sound of taps. A genuine Navy hero from our church family had come home and we laid him to rest.

I heard nothing of his courage and heroism announced on the local stations. I heard repetitious reporters drone on about gold and bronze medals. Yet nothing was mentioned of the medals this man had earned. Don’t tell me he was just one and there were so many athletes competing. Don’t do that, because although there are hundreds, perhaps thousands of Olympic athletes, there are hundreds of thousands, even millions of true American heroes.

While there was not a passing mention of this man’s sacrifice or short life of character and courage, there was one short news story of interest. There was a gathering downtown in one of our major hotels here in Houston. Another small crowd had gathered. This small group of men grows smaller in number each year… yet taller in stature each moment. They are the last remaining of the Marines who fought for and were victorious at a small island known as Iwo Jima.

There may not be many who get excited about our heroes in uniform. Not many commemorative coins struck in their memory sold on late night TV. Yet I still humbly stand for such men and women who have earned my respect. I still shed tears when I think of their sacrifices. And yes, I still take time to pray for those serving now, for their safety and for their families. These people are and remain my heroes.

Yes it’s Valentine’s Day This Sunday!

And after all, what’s more romantic than ensuring a call center is staffed and preparing for hundreds of calls for prayer?

OK, perhaps that part was a bit rhetorical.

However, demonstrating your love for your Savior, others in the body of Christ, and even total strangers is a special blessing. That’s one of the reasons I’m here. Then there are the special groups of people who faithfully come out to pray with people. They began as total strangers and have become family touching lives one at a time month after month.

We could be anywhere on Valentine’s Day. We are all involved in our Church and after all this is Sunday. The classrooms, the lobbies, and worship areas are all more spacious and attention getting. Yet we come here for a different reason. These are people who come complete with a servant’s heart.

As I write this we have already been at this for more than two hours. We will continue with different teams of volunteers coming in for the next five hours. The simple truth is that there is an incredible need. Often it is a need that is more felt on days like Valentine’s Day. It is a day when people are reminded of love and happiness… and perhaps that they are alone today.

This band of volunteer’s chose to stay here and demonstrate their love for our Savior and this special area of ministry. Being here when those who are hurting call and need prayer is a powerful demonstration of love. Having known the love of God in our own lives is motivation to share that love with others.

The Bible says in John 15:13 that, “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” Jesus did that for us and more. Coming out to pray with others is a reasonable service. I share these thoughts today not to brag on those who come out and serve, and especially not myself. I share this with you in hopes you will find a place of service and touch lives. Yes, you will be a blessing to others. But here is the other side; you will be greatly blessed in the process!

Last year we received over 22,000 calls for prayer. The need is great, why not join in at your church and find a place of service.

The New Year has begun and I am Thrilled!

The New Year has begun and I am thrilled! The start of a new year means new opportunities, challenges and lives. There will be new opportunities to touch lives, be used of God, and see how God will work in our lives. We will also experience new challenges. Some of these will be difficult, some even heart breaking. Yet although every challenge comes wrapped in questions, we know that the changes inside the wrapping can be used for us to grow in grace, strength and trust in God. Tied to all of the opportunities and challenges are lives.

When I say lives this represents the cherished individuals God has blessed us with as the years have passed. They have taught us, loved us and sadly, sometimes for us, were called to leave us. Yet their love and memories live on… a special part of our lives. Then there are the wonderful lives that we have yet to meet but are waiting just around the next corner. These may help us to grow as individuals and we may be blessed to be a blessing in their lives.

It is February. January has already flown by. Don’t miss the opportunity to begin planning with excitement what you will do in the months ahead. Time will pass regardless what we do. Why not get involved in the blessings of the moments that await us? Spend time in the Word of God in the days ahead and look for what goals and dreams God will fulfill in us this year of our Lord 2010.

God bless!
Psalms 18:30 KJV – “As for God, his way is perfect: the word of the LORD is tried : he is a buckler to all those that trust in him.”
