To spend your valuable time trying to recruit people to fill a position that doesn’t exist? If that seems odd, imagine the frustration as you wonder why you get such a low response to your recruitment efforts for that position!

I am blessed to have some of the most committed volunteers to work with that exist on the planet, or any planet for that matter. And that is my fair and impartial opinion. However, I recently made a shocking discovery when doing some one-on-one training. The majority of my volunteers intercede in prayer for others – hence the term “intercessor.” I regularly recruit for intercessors. Ask for intercessors. Send out notes to prospective intercessors. During a one-on-one training session with a new intercessor he asked a simple question: What’s an intercessor?

OK, so I lost round one on effective communication. The title didn’t register with my new volunteer and so in their world the position really doesn’t exist. I had to wonder how many didn’t respond to my request for new “intercessors” who simply didn’t know what an intercessor was. For some reason they didn’t share the adventurous passion for volunteering for a position that didn’t exist in their vocabulary.

Those who are intercessors in prayer passionately intercede for other’s needs. They live a life of commitment. Not only living a “normal life” of: working, raising a family, and being involved in the community, but also in spending time in God’s Word, prayer and living a life consistent with their Christian values. Yet more than that they are passionate about other’s spiritual needs, their pains and sorrows and their eternal standing… heaven or hell.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

So as in most things in life and communicating, it is time to adjust and tweak my terms to best communicate a task, a need, a lifestyle. For now I will use the phrase: someone who passionately cares for others and is willing to commit to taking others and their needs to God in prayer. However, to tell the truth that is mostly the definition not a title. So help me find the best term to communicate that kind of person or position.

What should the proper “title” for someone who does make “intercession” a life commitment become? Last week I had inflamed an old injury which subsequently was causing much pain. Actually I was perfectly fine as long as I didn’t sit, stand, move or remain still. The trouble was that I had started to run short of options.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Since my original plans for Thanksgiving included a 4 hour drive to Lafayette, Louisiana to spend time in Cajun country it was time to modify my plans. I was initially disappointed since I had been dreaming of some seriously good cooking; I knew I needed a shorter journey. So at the last moment I changed my plans and opted for Brenham, Texas. Closer and a wonderfully relaxing and beautiful part of Texas, I always recommend Brenham as a great place to get away.

One of the things that I looked forward to was taking some night photography of several churches up in the surrounding countryside. There are a group of churches in the area that are each over a hundred years old. This is a great testimony to the founders and succeeding generations of each of these congregations. Well maintained, basic and rich in spiritual history. Additionally, I had discovered on the website for Washington County that these historic buildings are now part of lighted tour that can be viewed at night. I love night photography and prepared for the evenings shooting.

As I wound my way through the countryside and rolling hills I was soon disappointed to find darkened buildings where there should have been lighted buildings. This far out in the country combined with rain clouds moving in gave a new meaning to the word “dark.” On the rare occasions that I passed a farmhouse their lights stood out in brilliance. After a few more trips I conceded that the lighted tour was operating in “extreme green” mode. This was great for the ecology, saving energy and all, but leaving something to be desired as a night photo opportunity.

As I returned to the comfort of my hotel I began thinking of Matthew 5:16, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” I could not help but think how even a limited amount of light on these buildings would have caused them to stand out for miles amidst the darkness. Then I began to think of how much more the truth of a godly life and witness stands out in a cold world of spiritual darkness.

As I prepared for sleep and pondered the many blessings we each have, I thought again of the power of light in the midst of darkness. As I move from a time of Thanksgiving to the Christmas season, I pray that each of us will be certain to let our light shine. May each of us not be a silent witness, but a bold and committed source of light wherever we are and wherever we travel.

What one thing can you do this week to shine for Christ?

Copyright 2010 © Charles Lyons

Disclosure of Material Connection: I have not received any compensation for writing this post. Some of them had been on a mission trip out of the country and had just returned this week. They were well received and greatly used of God as the Gospel was received by many. They were especially impressed with night services to hear the old hymns of the faith sung out loud and strong, although not in a language they were used to. A subtle reminder to us all that God is omnipresent.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

In spite of the bad choices we may be making as a nation I still believe that God’s protective hand is on us. I also believe we will be held accountable for our tremendous resources balanced against the many times we remain silent to share the gospel. Yet, what a blessing to be reminded that we don’t have exclusive use on God. He is ready to touch and honor His promises regardless of the language being spoken.

It is easy to get frustrated by “things” that go on in our day to day life. Let’s keep our hearts and minds focused on our God and the power of the gospel. Scott, one of the volunteers who just returned, shared that he and another man was trying to speak with a couple who wanted nothing to do with foreigners. However, in the hall way was a young woman who was ready and willing to hear about Christ. When the couple’s door closed in their face the young woman came over and asked to know about the gospel. Literally sometimes we face a closed door. We do well when we look around for those who are hungering for the gospel. Oh, and yes, she did accept Christ as Savior!

Our God remains as close as our hearts while still touching lives around the world. These lights are wired to a separate power supply that is backed up on battery. These are set up in two strings to back-up the back-up. Perhaps that seems over prepared but when the volunteers are taking calls for prayer anything can and usually does happen.

Everything can be going fine until the calls start to come in. A chance to pray or lead someone to Christ and the AC warms instead of cools, the electricity fails or worse… we run out of coffee. So we keep fans, batteries and reserves of coffee just in case. This morning I just received a shipment of new lamps and bulbs. Why? Because our teams of faithful volunteers haven’t just worn the bulbs out, they have worn the lamps out. Don’t misunderstand; they do take care of things. However, just the sheer demands of handling calls at numerous times and occasions will take its toll on the basic necessities.

As a matter of simple common sense I open each lamp in my office and pre-test them before having them distributed and placed in position. This batch is a slightly different design and needed an extra moment to set up. I turned the rotating knob to test and instant disappointment. Yes, the light did come on, but it was dim. So dim that I knew this wouldn’t do the job for us. Frustrated I pulled the packing slips and started to call my order person to make arrangements to return boxes of lamps. As I did, I turned the knob so the bulb could cool down for repackaging. Of course that is when the lamp came up to full brightness. There are two settings on the new lamps, low and high.

Lesson learned? Yes of course test the obvious first, but more important a subtle reminder about believers. We all have access to the same power through the Spirit and the Word, but do we use it? Perhaps more important, are we perhaps sometimes guilty of being connected but running without accessing full power? We have our Bibles but do we read daily and commit passages to memory? We have local churches but are we really turning the knob to full power or are we coasting when we could be really passionately connected? Having salvation is running on low, sharing our faith is turning the switch to full; mentoring the one we lead to Christ might need a three way switch!

Ask yourself this question, what is some element in your life where you are ready to turn the knob to full power?

Copyright 2010 © Charles Lyons
Disclosure of Material Connection: I have not received any compensation for writing this post. We are reminded in Scripture to praise the Lord, to think on what is of good report and be still and know that God is God. Why then is it so hard to do any of that when a coworker or manager, friend or family member is criticizing, complaining and generally trying to rob the sunshine from an otherwise blessed day?

Often the truth is that many people carry far too much emotional garbage. I can still recall a friend of mine that rarely traveled. When they did travel it looked more like moving day than vacation day. Every contingency had been allowed for. Every resource that “might be” needed had been packed or stowed and was dragged on the adventure. Most would never be used and sometimes didn’t survive the journey. In contrast I had a friend who traveled as part of his work. 20+ days of every month found him in transit, in airports, in rental cars or hotels. He rarely had more than one case. He carried what he needed and that was enough.

People with emotional garbage are carrying every memory, moment and muscle cramp from their past. They act like they will need it for the future. They don’t, they need the lessons not the luggage! The more they carry with them the more people they bump into and the more discomfort, pain and arguments that ensue. We each need to begin setting down and leaving behind us those things that caused us pain. They are not worth carrying with us, hurting us and hurting others.

The lessons we learn from painful moments are worth taking with us. They are and can become an emotional Ph.D. from the school of life. Best of all they can be a powerful tool to more beneficially deal with a future moment and a way to help others have victory over a bad moment. Why carry the luggage when you can carry the lessons?

Take a look at what you are feeling stressed over and ask yourself what lesson you can learn from it? Then look for someone overloaded with the emotional baggage and offer to help them lose some of the luggage.

Copyright 2010 © Charles Lyons
Disclosure of Material Connection: I have not received any compensation for writing this post. How God Blessed!

This morning in our call center has been fabulous. We had 50% more volunteers come in to help with the calls. We were scrambling to get people seated. Then the calls began coming. A wonderful response by people who needed to know that there are those who care, and there are people who believe God, and best of all God will hear and act on our prayers. We are still getting calls right now so we are not able to count all the calls yet. However, I needed to stop long enough to praise God and ask for your prayers.

Pray for continued wisdom for those who are answering calls and praying with others. Pray that there will be a great harvest of souls. Pray that our volunteers will stay refreshed. Pray that we remain good stewards of such opportunities.

I am reminded of the Scripture in Psalm 18:33, “He maketh my feet like hinds’ feet, and setteth me upon my high places.” Oh how God blesses and uses our weaknesses to accomplish great things. He makes our movements agile so we can be where we can be used. He places us where we can have the opportunity to look at a great distance and see some of the many ways He is working in the lives of people. He does give us feet that can move and a high perspective. How awesome is our God and may He get the glory in all things.

Copyright 2010 © Charles Lyons

Disclosure of Material Connection: I have not received any compensation for writing this post. Lots of lightening, thunder and yes, heavy rains. Great special effects, a typical summer time moment. Best of all my office is close enough to the outside to hear the sounds and even feel the vibration of the thunder. My office is also far enough inside the building to feel safe and secure amidst the storm.

I enjoy the moment because it reminds me so much of what it is like being a Christian in this life. Going through the storm is a little like being saved, we walk amidst the storms of life yet enjoy the peace that passes all understanding. We only have a right to feel scarred when we try to handle things on our own. Yet when we lean on our Lord and trust in His Word, the storms seem distant and the way becomes clear. I thank God that He is personal, faithful and involved in the day to day not just eternity.

By the way, prior to the storm hitting I went for a walk over to the Sanctuary. Here is a picture from my cell phone camera of the steeple just prior to the storm.

Copyright 2010 © Charles Lyons

Disclosure of Material Connection: I have not received any compensation for writing this post. And To Act

I love it when a passage makes it so clear how God listens. In Mark 10:47-52 Jesus is coming to Jericho and along the road side are two blind men. They cry out to Jesus and other people tried to quite them. Yet, they still cried out and when they did the Bible says that Jesus stood still. Jesus paid attention to two men who called out in need and answered their cry for healing.

Things haven’t changed much. There are so many hurting people crying out and the world wants them to be silent and not disturb the status quo. Yet God listens and acts. What to me is most special is that He will work through you and me to meet the need. Sometimes the need is for prayer and the plan of salvation. Other times the need is a resource or a word of encouragement. Whatever the need, the fact that God will use us is a humbling thing. Let’s keep our ears open not only to hear the cry of those who are hurting, but to the leading of the Spirit of God when He directs us to act.

Copyright 2010 © Charles Lyons

Disclosure of Material Connection: I have not received any compensation for writing this post. In many ways I could call him brilliant. Who was comfortable with coding and decoding, had served as an agent behind enemy lines during World War II, and was a pioneer in the birth and growth of computers. Yet, the war and the nature of his work took a terrible toll on his life. Not having accepted Jesus Christ as Savior, my Father had much strength but lacked the inner strength to stand against the stresses he had endured for so many years. My Father left when I was two years old.

Yet there is a man, who has since gone to be with the Lord, who called me son. God raised up another man who was never a part of our family. Who was married and raised his own children. Yet, still found the time to be a Dad to many generations of “Junior Boys” in Sunday school. I know that he touched many lives and I know that he impacted mind. After all the years he has been with the Lord it is difficult to type these lines without coming to tears. I greatly miss him and definitely remember him.

I was blessed with an Uncle who was a man of faith, culture and character. He blessed my life by setting a high standard of what a man should be. What I know of being a gentleman I learned and mirrored from his life. He served our country in many different ways. He served our family in many more ways. He was involved in the arts, sciences, diplomacy, and mastered many languages. The most unique thing about my Uncle was his inheritance. Until I became of age, my middle brother and I were listed on our Mother’s will to be raised and adopted by this Uncle. It was a comfort to child to know he was that loved.

My Father was a great patriot who willingly and without reservation gave his life and innermost thoughts for freedom and his country. My Uncle demonstrated culture and refinement that gave him a power in his voice without ever raising it. My Dad taught me compassion and the power of having a heart for God. I never saw my Father cry, yet I knew he had a depth of commitment to his country that could not be matched. I frequently saw my Dad weep for a soul that was lost or a young person who was going through a difficult time. I wrote letters to my Father that went unanswered. If I called my Uncle he was there for me. I never doubted that there was a day when my Dad was alive that I was not mentioned in his prayers.

I have been truly blessed. On this Father’s Day I realize that I have had both a Father, and a Dad. They just didn’t happen to be the same man. Yet, I have been blessed to pick up qualities and strength from my Father, my Uncle and my Dad. I would be wrong to grow bitter and as why I could not have been like others with both in one. If I have strength and character it stems from the devotion that God has instilled in me through a Godly, Mother, a Patriotic Father, and yes, a Godly Dad and Uncle. So when I come to Father’s Day I am not sad though I may weep from their physical absence. Instead I give thanks, and look for men of any age that need that simple word of encouragement and prayer that their Father’s may have forgotten or did not know how to share. I have lived long enough to want to be known as a cultured man of prayer and a Patriot who is not afraid to shed a tear and encourage others.

In memory of my Father, Thomas Joseph Lyons, my Uncle James Hudson Culver and my Dad, Guy Fuller, may each of you who read this note be blessed with such men in your lives. Further, a special note to single moms, from the time I was two years old my Mom raised four children. Most Father’s Day’s passed without the presence of Father, Uncle or Dad. So I decided to give my Mom both Mother’s Day and Father’s Day cards. When she tried to divert the card to my Father, I reminded her that I knew that it was she who was there for me all year long. From the age of nine I was aware that she was wearing two hats and I felt no lacking only gratitude for her love. If you are reading this and raising your children on your own, don’t be discouraged or feel you are falling short. God can do a great work through you in your children’s lives.

Copyright 2010 © Charles Lyons
Disclosure of Material Connection: I have not received any compensation for writing this post. We need to stay in the Word to recognize His word! The passage that this is from is John 1:19-34. I like this passage because it is full of lessons.

Vs 19, A reminder that simply being religious doesn’t guarantee you understand what God is doing.

Vs. 20, John the Baptist makes clear that he is not the Christ, he has many followers yet recognizes his place and demonstrates humility.

Vs 23, John understood His calling and stays on track, he is the voice carrying the message, he is not the message.

Vs 32, Continuing to serve, John is permitted to witness God at work!

Vs. 34, John knows how to witness, he testifies of what he personally has experienced, he didn’t argue or debate religion!

Lessons to learn and practice, living a life where God is glorified and Christ is lifted up allows the freedom for the Spirit of God to freely work in and through our lives.

God bless!

Copyright 2010 © Charles Lyons

Disclosure of Material Connection: I have not received any compensation for writing this post. This past week I have been reading afresh, one of his messages titled: “Soul Winning.” Among the many jewels to be found in this message I found this:

“The preacher himself wins souls, I believe, best, when he believes in the reality of his work, when he believes in instantaneous conversions. How can he expect God to do what he does not believe God will do? He succeeds best who expects conversion every time he preaches. According to his faith so shall it be done unto him. To be content without conversions is the surest way never to have them: to drive with a single aim entirely at the saving of souls is the surest method of usefulness.”

I agree with this statement for many reasons. The most obvious reason I agree is practical experience. When we try to share our faith or the simple plan of salvation in our own strength our adversary tends to persuade us, it’s not going to happen. This is more than a lack of faith; it is a loss of confidence. It is a loss in the confidence of our heavenly Father to do what He has done in the past. It can be a loss of confidence in us to be effective.
The reality is that God is faithful. God will bless our efforts in soul winning in a large part based on how much of the Scripture is in us and how much we lean on Him. It is after all His Word that God promised to bless. It is the Word of God working in us that can make us more confident, effective and yes, wise. After all, “he that winneth souls is wise (Proverbs 11:30.)

Yes I know that people have a free will and can reject the saving grace of God. However, it is our responsibility to go forward empowered and confident that God will give the victory. Doubt on our part reflects on the One we represent. Why would someone give their life to and trust for salvation, when it comes across that we seem to have our doubts. I chose to believe in God not only for salvation but also for soul winning.

Our confidence in God’s ability to work through us in soul winning will be seen in the person who needs the Savior. That confidence that God will touch others through us may well be the impetuous to see someone make a decision to follow Christ. May we always remain confident in Christ and may we be used of God in the marvelous area of soul winning!

Copyright 2010 © Charles Lyons

Disclosure of Material Connection: I have not received any compensation for writing this post. Let us not forget!

This is a remarkable weekend that is approaching. It is the day we celebrate the resurrection of our Lord.

It is a day that serves to remind us well of the ultimate sacrifice of love. I encourage you to take some time between now and this weekend to read Isaiah 53. This prophetical documentation of the crucifixion cannot help but to humble us. In the face of so great a love that would allow God to sacrifice His Son or for Jesus to take on not simply the physical pain but the repulsion of all sin on Him is more than I can comprehend. Although it is rarely mentioned, meditate on how this affected the Spirit of God, He who is the very example of compassion and comfort, to witness and experience what was done to Jesus the Christ.

As we face another opportunity to demonstrate our love for God by coming together to worship and serve, let us be both mindful and thankful for His great love. May God truly bless you this day and everyday as we seek to serve our Lord.

God bless,

Charles

Copyright 2010 © Charles Lyons

Disclosure of Material Connection: I have not received any compensation for writing this post. At such moments it is good to remember we have a personal God. I can recall times when it seemed there was no one on my side, I felt like whatever I would do just wouldn’t be enough. In the midst of that I found I called on God more than in others. He was and always will be there.

We need to remember that when we call on Christ in salvation a family connection comes into existence. The warmth and presence of God is something tangible that will comfort our hearts, lift our spirits and take us from and through the darkest moments into the sunshine of peace.

His hand is not short that it cannot save us or his ear closed that it will not listen. The work was hard but an incredible blessing. Then when I returned home, after being gone for two and half days, I found my home trashed and burgled. If you have been through this you know the feeling. If not, you can possibly imagine some of the emotions anyone would experience. Yet after a couple of days to look over my shoulder emotionally, I can see in some small way what God is doing in me.

He remains God and Lord of my life. “Things” regardless of how emotionally attached and significant from my past are things. Yes, my home was entered in my absence without my knowledge or consent. Items, books, clothing, tables, chairs, even food from the refrigerator and so much more were thrown about and trashed. Mementos of a loved one were stolen. A since of violation and loss of safety has been experienced.

Yet, through all of this I am becoming more keenly aware of the fact that my home was broken in to, but I am not broken. I am still able to serve the ministry as I was while the intrusion was taking place. God was faithful to spare me the moment and now helps me in the recovery. In all likelihood the things stolen will remain that way, but God’s presence is as sweet and comforting as ever. The things stolen I was able to enjoy for a time and retain in my memory.

The greatest gift I have received is the comfort and compassion of God in my life. That is stored in a place where thieves cannot enter or destroy. The thieves will be held accountable of their actions just as I will be held accountable of my reaction. I chose to trust God, pick up the pieces and go forward serving wherever God will use me. Don’t waste the time we have. God’s service and sustaining grace is the absolute best!

Remember, it is bad enough to be broken in to, don’t fall into the enemies trap and become broken!

Matthew 6:19-21

“Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.”

Copyright 2010 © Charles Lyons

Disclosure of Material Connection: I have not received any compensation for writing this post. Two days at a 2,000 acre ranch in the rolling hills of Texas is a special place to be. The Iron Horse Ranch is a wonderful facility to stay in and strategize from. In addition, we were able to move out and explore and do team building over rough terrain. Lots of fresh ideas were inspired by the fresh air, incredible surroundings and the blessing of sharing goals with others with a passion to serve God.

Although this was a working time that we spent at the ranch, we came back recharged and revitalized. Being out of range for the cell phones may have been an advantage. You can get more done with God when the phone can’t ring! We were given this unique and special opportunity by someone who cared and shared our vision. Some of the things that made the articles interesting were their placement and their opposing content. The articles appeared across from each other. On the left page was an article about how more people are feeling hopeless in the job market, no future and no hope. On the right page there was an article about a man who grew up with wealth. However, this person’s father made it clear that he had to make serious choices and created balanced motivation to make choices about his future. The man had wealth, but his the son was still made to face tough choices. These choices he made and although he went in a direction that his father had not, he is a success and seems positive and optimistic about the future.

Two articles and two representatives of attitudes in stark contrast are present in the paper each within view just look left and right. We are each faced with similar choices every day. Each day we make powerful but often undervalued decisions that move us closer to brilliance and success or frustration. The resources available are far less significant than the attitude.

Yesterday I was blessed to spend two hours of time in a meeting. Some would dread a two hour meeting. I found excitement in that meeting. Why? Because although I felt I brought something to the meeting, the best asset I brought was a spirit to learn. Those I met with are strong in their respective fields of influence. I was blessed to share but also to learn and glean knowledge and understanding from some sharp people. I believe if you want to succeed and move forward there is some basic strength we should each develop and follow after. Please consider this short list of seven powerful strengths or traits we should incorporate into our lives and character.

1. We become those we are around – so associate up! The truth is that we are influenced by those we associate with. We pick-up the language as easy from a defeated negative person as we do from a passionate articulate goal setter. Who do you prefer to become?

2. We learn when we take personal accountability to read! There is a constant barrage around us of music good and bad, conversation encouraging and demoralizing and distractions of every sort. Are you a reader? Do you make a conscious effort to find good books by great authors that inspire, encourage and teach you things that will lift you up and make you an asset to your realm of influence? A book a month is not difficult once you commit.

3. We are better when we present ourselves better! If you slouch, you come across and even sound like all your energy is gone. If you don’t wear clean clothes you present yourself and begin to act like less of a person than you are. Little changes make big changes in your presentation and who you are becoming. Dress down you will go down, dress up you move up and change the atmosphere of those around you. You don’t have to spend a fortune to dress up. But the days of casual Fridays have impacted the other six days of the week. Raise the standard.

4. We can control our thoughts and what leaves our lips! No, the devil doesn’t make you do it… he leads you if you let him. Stop letting him lead. The Bible says that as we think in our heart we become. So as we read and expose our eyes and ears to information, expose our hearts to only the best. When we control what we take into our thoughts our language will improve and be an encouragement to others.

5. We can lift others up and with so little effort! A word of encouragement is greatly appreciated when you are down. A handwritten letter – not to be confused with an email means something. A smile for a person who has not seen one in a while impacts them. Make an effort to encourage someone each and every day, make it a habit. Make the person who serves us feel like the honored guest and you will not be diminished, you will be appreciated.

6. We are each just as human as the poorest person on the street – connect! We are too often tempted to look away and not make any contact with a homeless person or beggar on the street. That person may have succumbed to a set of circumstances that we have just barely missed. They may not have prepared sufficiently to have risen above the moment. But that is not reason to treat them as less than human. Eye contact will not hurt us and a simple word of encouragement costs you only a moment.

7. We look for God in the moments of “more than a coincidence” and start with God first! If we begin each day with God rather than just trying to fit Him into our schedules latter we will be the one to benefit. God’s wisdom in our hearts and minds can stir us to victory and compassion. Those “more than a coincidence” moments when God intervenes in our day are more special than those around us will ever appreciate. Take the time to look and appreciate what God is doing in your life.

Copyright 2010 © Charles Lyons

Disclosure of Material Connection: I have not received any compensation for writing this post. There is something special about being with creative people. This is especially true when their focus is on taking a talent like writing and finding ways to use it to God’s glory. One of the growing areas in Christian writing is Christian Fiction. Stories with strength, lessons about life, and a realistic view of how God works in situations are being written by writers of diverse cultures and background. I had the opportunity to speak with some sci-fi writers with a Christian focus, a unique and special area of interest.

People may enjoy reading great books; they may not appreciate the labor of love that goes on in the writing and marketing of books. This conference brought in some of the best teachers, established authors and editors to do the teaching. We, the writers, were hungry for practical sound teaching and we were blessed. In addition the fellowship was great to find others with similar struggles and challenges, questions and unique ways of bringing inspiration and ink together.

It was a great to be at the ACW Writer’s Conference. However, it is also good to be back home. In my absence a great team continued to keep touching lives and seeing people saved. Praise God for people of faith who support you in so many different ways. One of the wonderful ways we can feel God’s hand is in our work is when we are not the only ones working; God is working through the lives of those around us.

Copyright 2010 © Charles Lyons

Disclosure of Material Connection: I have not received any compensation for writing this post. To make and follow through on such a decision to serve God and His people is truly humbling. Let me take a moment and share a quote from Donald Barnhouse concerning the word, “approved:”

“In the ancient world there was no banking system as we know it today, and no paper money. All money was made from metal, heated until liquid, poured into moulds and allowed to cool. When the coins were cooled, it was necessary to smooth off the uneven edges. The coins were comparatively soft and of course many people shaved them closely. In one century, more than eighty laws were passed in Athens, to stop the practice of shaving down the coins then in circulation. But some money changers were men of integrity, who would accept no counterfeit money. They were men of honor who put only genuine full weighted money into circulation. Such men were called "dokimos" or "approved." Donald Barnhouse

This little history lesson has a purpose. When the ordination was held the men were reminded of the Scripture verse, II Timothy 2:15 which read:

“Study to shew theyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”

These men who were ordained and committed to the Gospel this week were challenged to study and show themselves to be “approved” unto God. Their lives need to match their commitment. These men are and will by God’s grace continue to be men of honor before God and men. Please take a moment to pray for our Christian leaders and especially the new Pastors and their wives who commit themselves to a life of significance and commitment. May they and all of us seek to live a life that is “approved.”

Copyright 2010 © Charles Lyons

Disclosure of Material Connection: I have not received any compensation for writing this post. Today is Texas Independence Day.

While one group of patriots fought bravely against greatly outnumbered and better equipped forces attacking the Alamo others fought a different kind of war. The battle for words to clearly say to the world, Texas values, will stand for, will live and die for freedom and independence. Lives at the Alamo were sacrificed. Yet the ripple that spread across Texas stirred the power of patriotism and courage that swells with pride the hearts of Texans to this day.

As a believer in Jesus Christ I am stirred with a different kind of emotion. Our stand took place at Calvary. We were surrounded by the binding cords of sin. It would take a sinless sacrifice to give us our freedom. We could not do it ourselves. Christ didn’t just go to the cross, He went to the grave and resurrected from that grave. Victory was achieved and we were granted forgiveness. To those who call on Christ as Savior are given the Freedom of forgiveness. The gift is still available and the ripple of freedom in Christ is still known today.

Today is Texas Independence Day, freedom is great – Freedom in Christ is best!

Copyright 2010 © Charles Lyons

Disclosure of Material Connection: I have not received any compensation for writing this post. Many lessons to be learned, and yet some things can be distilled down to basic necessity level.

From my time as a child unto the moment she went to be with the Lord I have been impressed with my Mother’s prayer life. She didn’t just pray, she knew how to communicate. She didn’t just ask God for stuff, she knew how to rely on God. It seems like she understood and valued the “personal” in personal relationship with Jesus Christ her Savior. With all the struggles she encountered raising us four children on her own; she did some powerful teaching with her life. Through her prayer life I learned some great lessons that I have tried to keep portable – something that I could take with me. Although there were many wonderful lessons, let me share three for now:

First, there are three persons in the Godhead, treat them like persons…

Matthew 28:19 gives us what is known as the great commission, “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost." Three persons but just one God. God gave us personalities and desired to have this wonderful relationship with us. Although I have a profound respect and humility regarding the holiness of God, that respect does not keep me at a distance.

He is the one that began the relationship by His sacrifice at Calvary. I responded to salvation, but that’s only part of it. I want to know Him and that starts with a belief that He, God, is knowable. So I treat God as God but also as a person that I can be personable with and share those things that are on my heart. How I feel, the things that trouble me, the things I need and also the things I find amazing, beautiful and fascinating.

Second, keep it a two way conversation, read the Bible first and last…

People seem to grasp the idea that praying is talking to God. Although for most there seems to be more asking for stuff than genuine communication going on. Stop and think about this for a moment, if someone you loved, you might even say “so loved” only came to you when they wanted something, how would you feel? What if when they came to you they did open up about what was on their heart or things going on in their life, but monopolized the conversation never gave you a chance to speak. How would you feel?

When we limit our conversation with God to a one way conversation – only we do the talking, we are losing out on fellowship and communication. Try this the next time you want to spend time with God, make it a two way conversation. First, remember the command, “Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heather, I will be exalted in the earth.” Psalms 46:10. Sometimes when we want to communicate with God we just have to stop and listen in earnest quietness. Yet most important, before we begin praying, read the Bible, when finish praying, read the Bible. Since the Bible is God’s Word, what better way to let Him speak than to read what He has to say – His Word?

Finally, follow up with God, don’t ask once and then forget it!

Spend time with God in whatever you are doing. Driving down the road? Talk with God, after all you have the time to yourself and besides, you may get a ticket for texting or calling on the cell phone, but I never heard of someone getting a ticket for praying.

Also, keep a prayer list. Pray about what you are taking to God and continue to pray until you have the answer. Then when the answer comes, write down how God answered. I have often observed that God rarely answers just like I asked – He almost always improves on the request. I get more than what I asked for. Not when I asked for it – but at the perfect moment.

One final thing about a prayer list with completed dates, when you are tired or feeling low, go to the list and read for encouragement. Few things feel as good as looking over a list of prayer requests and realizing how incredibly God has answered in your life and those around you. To realize the timing and wisdom of God in the people He brought into your life, moved out of your life and resources that came into play meet your need.

God is personal and wants to spend time with us – but He honors our free will. He will not monopolize the conversation, but how much better it is stop, be still and listen for God. Finally, it is exciting to be consistent in our requesting and talking with God, especially when we step back, realize what He has done and give Him the praise!

Copyright 2010 © Charles Lyons

Disclosure of Material Connection: I have not received any compensation for writing this post. Act On Your Vision!

I really do enjoy spending time with people who have vision and are prepared to act on their vision. I was blessed yesterday to spend some time with a doctor and an Assistant District Attorney. Their vision: to touch the lives of orphan children. They are in the process of putting together a non-profit organization to build, fund and run an orphanage.

Sure, they could complain about the problems of children without parents or homeless or even overcrowded conditions in state run organizations. Instead they are taking personal responsibility to make a difference. It will not take time from their busy schedules. It will not take it, because it is time that they are willingly giving.

This is a great lesson for all of us, the strength of giving of ourselves. It is important to count the cost before we commit to a project. However, if we focus on what it takes alone, we miss the blessing of giving. The focus is not money, stuff or time. The focus is allowing God to move through us and find where we can serve and touch lives. Whatever talent or gifts we feel we have, using them to the glory of God will at some point end up allowing us to touch lives in ways we could barely dream of.

Let us always practice not letting the business of the day take our time. We can recapture the most precious of moments when we chose where the time is spent. Capture the morning and spend it reading God’s Word first and praying. The rest of the day will be more manageable when reflect what and where God wants us and then taking our time and talents and going there.

Copyright 2010 © Charles Lyons
Disclosure of Material Connection: I have not received any compensation for writing this post. They span from his time as a child to his time now as an adult. From family to disease, he has a carried a load that most of his would have felt burdened down from any one individually. Yet he finished his first page with a statement of pure confidence in his ability to relate to God, understand His Word, and His appreciation of others in ministry who had been a blessing to him. He then continued on for another page requesting prayer for others, not he.

That to me is a profound example of the grace of God in a person’s life. The ability to go through so much negativity, pain and hurt and yet see God at work in his own life is a testimony to the man’s character and to the God he serves. This is faith that not only sustains; it is a faith that lays the foundation for a powerful testimony. It is not that you have to go through great hurt to have a great testimony. It is that you have to lean on God in the hurt, in the joy, in the sunshine and the rain that comes.

Each of us has the opportunity to turn our difficult moments into “Sonshine moments.” We have to simply keep our focus not on us, not on the events but on the Savior we love, serve and praise. He has redeemed us, once for all. It is a blessing to praise Him. Psalm 16:11, “Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fullness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.”

Copyright 2010 © Charles Lyons

Disclosure of Material Connection: I have not received any compensation for writing this post. A couple came into the restaurant and immediately walked back to the table area by-passing the hostess who does the seating. The woman walked up to what was presumably her preferred waitress and asked where she was. The waitress responded by pointing across the room and stating clearly, “I’m over there.” The woman responded positively and the couple went over and sat down at the table that the waitress had pointed to.

Perhaps this brief communication would not puzzle you. However, I confess a brief moment of confusion at the thought that when asked where a person was that you could clearly see followed by a response of pointing to a totally different area then where the person was standing made me wonder if there had been a brief shift in the time space continuum. OK, perhaps I’m overreacting to a simple question, but it did get me to thinking.

How many times do people ask questions and receive answers that obviously are not right and yet go ahead and act on it. The waitress was clearly not across the room, even if she was assigned to wait on that table that she pointed to. More often though, how often do we ask leaders about their beliefs or positions on matters, are given their answer and act on it… even when we know their reputation does not support it?

When we speak of politicians many people make their voting decision based on public sound bites. These are cleverly worded statements often scripted by speech writers and delivered by people who have them in memory if not their hearts. How often do we reach our decision based on the sound bite rather than the person’s record?

Of greater concern to me is our own personal integrity. Over time we develop a reputation, in our families, in the workplace and yes even in church. I wonder are we careful enough to rely on our reputation backing up our words or do we rely too much on an easy going character and smile. If so, are we any better than the politician? If we are to be someone who will have the respect of our families, coworkers and friends, our actions need to accurately reflect and support our words.

We are often quick to judge public figures. They can make a mistake and reporters and the public quickly attack. Yet for our own shortcomings we want lots of patience and lots of grace. Why not take the first step by walking a consistent walk of integrity. When our family, friends and coworkers want to know, “where we are” on an issue or how we feel about something, our actions should be the same place our words are. This is a special facet of integrity. Not just saying the right words but living the right words.

Let’s make sure people can see where we are and not have to rely on our words only. Remember Titus 1:16 KJV, “They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.”

Copyright © 2010 by Charles Lyons

Olympic Courage…

Most people I have encountered this past week have been pretty much obsessed with the Olympics. In fairness it is a global event that has a rich and long heritage. People and nations prepare long and hard to be ready to test their standings not only against their personal best – but against some of the world’s best athletes.

<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Don’t misunderstand what I am about to say as I have nothing against the Olympic Games. I have even been blessed to know a few athletes of that standing and yes, I was impressed with their talent and commitment. My only comment is one of perspective.

While the world watched in awe of skiers on Saturday many, yet a smaller crowd than those watching the Olympics, stood in respect for a young man at my church. While many listened for the announcements of scores… we listened to the sound of taps. A genuine Navy hero from our church family had come home and we laid him to rest.

I heard nothing of his courage and heroism announced on the local stations. I heard repetitious reporters drone on about gold and bronze medals. Yet nothing was mentioned of the medals this man had earned. Don’t tell me he was just one and there were so many athletes competing. Don’t do that, because although there are hundreds, perhaps thousands of Olympic athletes, there are hundreds of thousands, even millions of true American heroes.

While there was not a passing mention of this man’s sacrifice or short life of character and courage, there was one short news story of interest. There was a gathering downtown in one of our major hotels here in <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Houston. Another small crowd had gathered. This small group of men grows smaller in number each year… yet taller in stature each moment. They are the last remaining of the Marines who fought for and were victorious at a small island known as Iwo Jima.

There may not be many who get excited about our heroes in uniform. Not many commemorative coins struck in their memory sold on late night TV. Yet I still humbly stand for such men and women who have earned my respect. I still shed tears when I think of their sacrifices. And yes, I still take time to pray for those serving now, for their safety and for their families. These people are and remain my heroes.

Copyright © 2010 by Charles Lyons

Yes it’s Valentine’s Day This Sunday!

And after all, what’s more romantic than ensuring a call center is staffed and preparing for hundreds of calls for prayer?

OK, perhaps that part was a bit rhetorical.

However, demonstrating your love for your Savior, others in the body of Christ, and even total strangers is a special blessing. That’s one of the reasons I’m here. Then there are the special groups of people who faithfully come out to pray with people. They began as total strangers and have become family touching lives one at a time month after month.

We could be anywhere on Valentine’s Day. We are all involved in our Church and after all this is Sunday. The classrooms, the lobbies, and worship areas are all more spacious and attention getting. Yet we come here for a different reason. These are people who come complete with a servant’s heart.

As I write this we have already been at this for more than two hours. We will continue with different teams of volunteers coming in for the next five hours. The simple truth is that there is an incredible need. Often it is a need that is more felt on days like Valentine’s Day. It is a day when people are reminded of love and happiness… and perhaps that they are alone today.

This band of volunteer’s chose to stay here and demonstrate their love for our Savior and this special area of ministry. Being here when those who are hurting call and need prayer is a powerful demonstration of love. Having known the love of God in our own lives is motivation to share that love with others.

The Bible says in John 15:13 that, “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” Jesus did that for us and more. Coming out to pray with others is a reasonable service. I share these thoughts today not to brag on those who come out and serve, and especially not myself. I share this with you in hopes you will find a place of service and touch lives. Yes, you will be a blessing to others. But here is the other side; you will be greatly blessed in the process!

Last year we received over 22,000 calls for prayer. The need is great, why not join in at your church and find a place of service.

Copyright 2010 Charles Lyons

The New Year has begun and I am Thrilled!

The New Year has begun and I am thrilled! The start of a new year means new opportunities, challenges and lives. There will be new opportunities to touch lives, be used of God, and see how God will work in our lives. We will also experience new challenges. Some of these will be difficult, some even heart breaking. Yet although every challenge comes wrapped in questions, we know that the changes inside the wrapping can be used for us to grow in grace, strength and trust in God. Tied to all of the opportunities and challenges are lives.

When I say lives this represents the cherished individuals God has blessed us with as the years have passed. They have taught us, loved us and sadly, sometimes for us, were called to leave us. Yet their love and memories live on… a special part of our lives. Then there are the wonderful lives that we have yet to meet but are waiting just around the next corner. These may help us to grow as individuals and we may be blessed to be a blessing in their lives.

It is February. January has already flown by. Don’t miss the opportunity to begin planning with excitement what you will do in the months ahead. Time will pass regardless what we do. Why not get involved in the blessings of the moments that await us? Spend time in the Word of God in the days ahead and look for what goals and dreams God will fulfill in us this year of our Lord 2010.

God bless!
Psalms 18:30 KJV – “As for God, his way is perfect: the word of the LORD is tried : he is a buckler to all those that trust in him.”

The Price of Greatness

There is a wonderful passage that most of us have heard especially in the context of what we need to do as a nation. The verse is 2 Chronicles 7:14, “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.”

There is an element in this short but powerful verse that I want to draw your attention to. The phrase, “shall humble themselves, and pray…” is what I refer to. That simple statement is a stumbling block to saved and lost alike. The simple act of humility is rare and it is also the first step of a student. When we are really going to learn and to be blessed we must begin with the acknowledgment that there is someone greater or smarter who will teach us.

In our context there is the One who is greater who can save us, guide us, keep us and sustain us. From the moment we call out in salvation we begin a journey of drawing closer to Him as we continue to humble ourselves and find where He will lead us. We get in trouble when we don’t keep this attitude.

I am blessed to have a great group of volunteers who are dynamic and humble prayer intercessors. They have set their priorities right, they value interceding for others over self. Every time you and I maintain our own prayer life and daily Bible study in a way that keeps us in an attitude to be used of God that is great. Sir Winston Churchill said that, “The price of greatness is responsibility.”

The world has far too many religious people. We need people of character who look for opportunities to make faith attractive and are willing to serve God wherever and whenever He leads. That is our daily responsibility to be humble and to kneel in prayer. Then, having prayed, we need to stand ready for the action that God will lead us to.

Copyright 2009 Charles Lyons

He is risen... He is risen indeed!

Easter time is very special for those of us who know Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. It’s better than Christmas in many ways although they walk hand-in-hand. Christmas is promise. Easter is the fulfillment.

Far more than colored eggs, Easter baskets and too many chocolates, like there could ever be too much chocolate, is just the seasonal celebration. Yet the power of Easter is in the promise fulfilled. From the fall of man in the Garden of Eden we needed a Savior. We needed a sacrifice that could do what we could not do ourselves. The promise of a Savior was given and He arrived in a manger. He grew to manhood and had a ministry that touched lives. Then the world thought they had the victory when He was crucified on a tree and placed in a borrowed grave.

Of all the things in this world that do make sense, using a borrowed tomb for Jesus made sense. He would, after all, only need it for three days and nights. He arose. That’s why we have salvation. God loved men, women and children so much that He gave His only Son to shed His blood for our sins. It would have been a great sacrifice if He died for us. Yet, it is a perfect love and gift because He didn’t just die, He conquered death, Jesus arose from the tomb in three days and nights. Just like He said.

He’s coming back for those who have asked for salvation. Will He? The answer is simple. Yes, just like He said… He is risen… He is risen in deed!

Copyright 2009 Charles Lyons

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://writelyons.blogspot.com/2009/04/he-is-risen-he-is-risen-indeed.html' title='He is risen... We are told to rejoice in hope, to be patient in tribulation and to be continuing instantly in prayer. On the surface it is good. Dig a little deeper and it is great!

A quick review of the Greek words give us a richer meaning to enjoy. Rejoicing comes from a word that implies to be glad to even thrive in the moment. Hope refers to a confident expectation of our eternal salvation. Patient speaks of enduring, to remain, not to recede or to flee. Tribulation refers to being in distress or oppression. Instant, to show one’s self to be courageous, to give unremitting care to a thing. However here is the big surprise, prayer, in this verse speaks of the place uniquely set apart for or well suited for the offering up of prayers.

All of that to say this, we as believers in Jesus Christ should thrive out of a confidence that comes because of knowing we have eternal salvation. We should endure and not to run from times of oppression or distress. We can and should be courageous during this time of distress by giving unremitting care to keeping ourselves in a place well suited for praying.

I don’t believe that it would be over spiritualizing to say that this does not mean that we have to live in church. However we should not neglect our time of worship with the local body of believers. None the less we should keep ourselves equipped to intercede wherever we are. We should keep ourselves, the temple of the Holy Spirit, in such a state that we would always be ready for His presence and to communicate with Him. We cannot use words that are not fit for His presence on our lips or in our mind. We should not store up visual images that may be comfortable in this world but not in our mind as we would go to God in prayer.

Holiness is too often mocked or misunderstood in the day in which we live. Yet how can we go boldly to God in prayer and not set our hearts and minds separated to Him? We live in this world as believers. We witness and share our faith with others. But we can never be comfortable with sin. We have been bought with a price, the sacrifice of Jesus Christ who died and resurrected. Is it really so much to set a standard of separating ourselves to His service in school, work or home?

As we face the start of another week, let’s take time to worship, to praise and pray. Let’s also take that relationship we have with Christ with us the rest of the week to be the best that we can be. Let’s keep our mind, heart and body in such a way that we are ready to be in prayer and give unremitting care to serving our Lord wherever He leads.

Copyright 2009 Charles Lyons

Time to Review and Plan. . .

As the New Year begins I take the time to review the past year and make plans for the new. Seems basic enough but don’t confuse this process with New Year’s resolutions. They seldom last and usually have little meaning because they focus on a finished byproduct rather than the change that is needed. For example losing weight is the byproduct of improving our eating and exercise patterns.

Some years ago I set aside a weekend to really nail down those things that were really important to me. To verbalize them in a way that I could pen them down and use as a point of focus. Having done that, I review them consistently and take a hard look at them each year at this time. The main thrust is this, those things that I spent my time on in the past year and accomplished – was it in harmony with those items most important to me. I ask the question, “Did these unrecoverable points of time draw me closer to being a man who lives those key elements that I determined that I value.” If the answer is yes, then I have cause to celebrate. Where the answer is no, I look at how to purge those activities from my daily schedule.

Finally I set the goals for the year that are in harmony with what is truly important to me. I put dates on those activities. Perhaps most important, I set key measurements to know when those goals have been effective. For example, has the change in diet and exercise resulted in planned weight lose and an increase in energy. That was the measurement. By the way, the point that is important to me is not to weigh a certain weight. The goal that is important is to have the energy level to be in the workplace, to go out witnessing, to meet the opportunities that help me to serve my Lord.

Let me challenge you to do the same. Regardless of what we do, if the Lord tarries and we live another year, we will use this time. We can either waste it or invest it. Watch it go by, blame the byproducts on other’s influence on us or take charge of our destiny by choosing our focus throughout the year.

Joshua 24:15, “And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”

Copyright 2009

The Kentucky Lady…

The past three and a half months you might think that I dropped from the world. In a way I might be tempted to agree. However I have walked through a valley that I would not have missed although it was mixed with pain and joy. About four months ago now my Mother, a remarkable lady of faith and character, a true patriot, went to the hospital emergency room. Over the following 3 ½ months we moved through the medical system, hospital to rehabilitation hospital, rehabilitation hospital to skilled nursing facility, skilled nursing facility to hospital – again, back to the skilled nursing facility and finally to the hospice unit of a specialty hospital.

Through all that time I saw fresh, the character of a woman who was remarkable. For the most part she was without pain but continued to lose strength as the days turned into weeks and then months. She experienced pain towards the very end as the slow process of her body giving way to the struggle of time eventually reached that point where she left this place and went to be with her Lord. The strength and love that she demonstrated was more than I have seen in any other person.

My Mom has for the most part raised her daughter and three sons on her own. Both husbands from two marriages had passed away and she took the responsibility to stand in the gap for all of us. Through her support and love we grew to become not just adults but Christians of faith and active belief. We learned about her God by her actions and about prayer from her example. We each know that we are to the greatest extant who we are and what we have accomplished because of her devotion and prayer. She was a remarkable lady.

She earned the title the “Kentucky Lady” during World War II when as a code breaker; she sometimes filled in on the radio to ships. The sailors at sea heard her Kentucky accent and affectionately referred to her as the “Kentucky Lady.” It was later found out that since the US frequently named battleships after states that the Japanese monitoring radio traffic had spent time trying to locate what had to be a battle group, “The Kentucky Lady.”

I encourage you to take a moment and read her obituary in the Houston Chronicle and an article they did on her life a few days after her passing. Her life was a comfort and inspiration not only to her family but the countless lives that she touched. This Christmas and New Years has been very difficult for me personally. Yet I honestly can say that the faith in God that she taught me is working in a remarkable way. His grace is sufficient. Although that grace doesn’t come early, it does come right on time and meets my every need. Please pray for the family she leaves behind. She is fine and in the presence of the Lord she knew, loved and served.

Chronicle Obid:
http://www.legacy.com/HoustonChronicle/DeathNotices.asp?Page=LifeStory&PersonId=121530366

Chronicle Article:
http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/deaths/6174549.html

Copyright 2009

Passing Through the Valley of Baca…

There is an old song that speaks of overlooking a four-leaf clover; I think we can sometimes do the same thing. I know that I have been guilty of it from time to time. Getting so wrapped up in the day or perhaps just going through the motion of what we do daily and missing out on a real blessing.

This morning I was reading God’s Word in the book of Psalms and came upon Psalm 84:6-7. The verses read, “Who passing through the valley of Baca make it a well; the rain also filleth the pools. They go from strength to strength, every one of them in Zion appeareth before God.” A friend asked me the simple question, what does that mean? Profoundly I said, I don’t know.

For some wonderful reason I was not content to move on and began doing a little research. Initially I found a reference of the valley of Baca referring to mulberry trees and making a well. Not much to go on I admit. Yet as I continued my research I found the hidden golden nuggets that God leaves for us when we stop our pace and pause and spend time with Him.

The context of the passage and the reference “Valley of Baca” refers to an area that is a valley, heavily traveled. Ruts and ditches and even potholes begin to build up on the dirt road. For some it is an advantage when the rains come they can gather water in wells, but for others it becomes an excuse. How can you travel a road when the ditches and potholes begin to fill with water? The path that is referred to is the path to Jerusalem and the travelers are those going to worship God at the temple.

Traveling through the valley of Baca could become an excuse not to go to worship God today, after all the weather is bad. Others plan even for the inclement weather and road conditions and are committed to spending time with God. In verse 7 they go from strength to strength, or simply from one problem to the next, but they achieve their goal and they spend time with God.

I remember growing up in an area that had bad winters and worse roads when covered in ice or snow. My Mom, a godly woman who raised 4 children on her own, shared and instilled her faith in her children. Best of all she always made God attractive, someone you would want to know. Her standard was always, if it was a weekday rather than Sunday, would you make the effort to go out, to work or school or whatever? If the answer was yes we were up and getting ready for church!

It has been many years since those days for me. Yet, this week calls for rain. There will be tropical storms to the south and strong winds and rain for my area. I will get up each day and go to work. Best of all, the roads in my valley of Baca may be damp, even deep, but either way I will spend time with God. His Word remains, …a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path (Psalm 119:105.)

Have a Blessed Day, and maintain you path, your Valley of Baca!

Copyright 2008

Volunteers Are Great People...

Recently I had the great privilege to do a training session for a group of people who will be volunteering in a prayer-line phone bank. A great church in our area, Sagemont Church, Houston, TX, is adding a television broadcast to their ministry outreach. What a great way to spend a Saturday morning!

Now maybe at first you might be thinking that Saturday is a better day to sleep in or get outside during great weather. Yet how much better it is to be in the company of people whose hearts and minds are setting God first. These folks have all the regular demands on their schedules we all share. But they made the time to come out and prepare to help others. Volunteers are a special group of people to start with. However, when they set their hearts and minds to seek God's will to help others its really special.

They came and spent what felt like a tiny moment yet in fact was two hours of training. They listened; they interacted and asked great questions. It's exciting to think how God will use this team to minister to total strangers who call out for someone who will care enough to pray and intercede on their behalf. It is always a special blessing to be used of God and have a small part in seeing others grow and stretch. Please pray these and the many others who give their time to help others. And of course, remember there are always opportunities to serve for those who are willing!

God bless and have a great Lord's Day!

Copyright 2007

Great Time in Brenham

A few weeks ago I was blessed to spend some time in the town of Brenham, Texas. If you are not familiar with the place you need to spend some time there. Peaceful, fun and very relaxing. My reason for the trip was to help my mom celebrate her 92 birthday!

We had a great time and it is especially at such moments that I am thankful for her relatively good health. At 92 she is still able to get out and loves to travel. I recall on one occasion during a routine check up she asked her doctor what she should expect as far as her activity level. His answer was that it was up to her, after all at her age she could set the standard.

I have since given that statement more thought and realized the wisdom that was in it. True, statistically, not many of us live to be over 90. So when you achieve that age you can set the standard. However, I find myself now asking why I should settle for other people's expectations for my life now? Of the many things I have learned from my mother over the years, setting high standards for yourself and living up to what you know is right regardless has always been high on the list of lessons learned. I believe that when any of us lower our expectations to match what the world would settle for we have done us and the world an injustice.

So as I continue on this adventure we call life, I chose to set a higher standard. I chose to seek higher hills and mountain top moments. Most of all, I realize that to get to the mountains means crossing some valleys and a lot of climbing. So I encourage you as well to find out what mountain you want to take on and count the cost. Let each of us commit to setting our own higher standards and settle only for the best that God through us can and will accomplish. I don't want to arrive in my 90's and wish I could have accomplished more. I want to reach every age and know that I am doing more.

Have a blessed day!

Copyright 2007

Traveling to a Place You Could Call Home…

Last week I had the pleasure of traveling back to Mississippi for a quick visit. One of the pleasures of writing is to not only get published but to spend some time getting the word out about the book. In doing this you meet some of the most interesting people and places.

A wonderful and unusual town just inside the Stateline entering Mississippi is the city of Picayune. It is a small town that has grown in the past year or so not because of commerce but because of the heart of the people. Picayune, in the eyes of economists and statisticians would be a small southern town. However, if you have eyes to see, ears to hear and a heart that can be touched you will find pleasure in Picayune.

The growth that took place in Picayune stemmed from the aftermath of hurricane Katrina. When the storm came through there was massive damage surrounding the area around Picayune. In Picayune there was a loss of power and water and even some building damage. Numerous trees were fallen or at least limbs were down. But the power of Picayune was not in the power company or any other utility, it was and remains in the hearts and faith of the people and churches.

Since the time of Katrina Picayune has doubled in size as many of those from New Orleans to the Mississippi Gulf Coast moved to the safety of this previously small town. Yes it has doubled in size during that time. Yet the heart of the people of Picayune has remained the same, enormous! Their love, compassion and Christian action can be seen in the way so many have been assimilated into the community. From the Shoney's who initially stopped using their menus and served only from a buffet so they could serve more faster to the First Baptist Church who moved services to the park across the street to meet the needs of the people faster, love has been demonstrated like a giant welcome mat spread from Ocean Springs, Mississippi to New Orleans, Louisiana.

Picayune has always been a special place. The people are genuine and full of those values that make America and perhaps especially the South, a place you want to call home.

Copyright 2007

Streams of Light and Tuff Decisions...

Pulling back the curtains, streams of sunlight poured in as I gazed at the ocean front view. Staying in a resort hotel, even in the off-season should be a pleasant experience. But how pleasant can it be if you are wondering if you just lost your job? Great way to make a first impression, by challenging your new boss on an ethical issue. Not a big issue to anyone else at the meeting of managers and management officials. Yet it was a big issue for me that could not be crossed.

That moment of my life was almost 20 years ago and yet whenever I think of it I can remember the smell of the ocean, the darkness of my emotions that spoiled the sunset and the look on my manager’s face. The confrontation was not bad or brisk. Yet it was somber to realize that it was a make or break moment in my career. The reason I relive it from time to time, as many of us do with life impacting moments, is because it said a lot about who I was and what I stood for. I have never regretted the decision and ironically that decision energized my career rather than hurt it.

Standing up for what you believe in is one of those things I consider a non-choice. There are people who wrestle with moral dilemmas and issues every time they are confronted with one. However, I believe that when you make firm in your mind what your values are everything else comes a bit easier. I never had to debate my decision those 20 years ago and I still don’t. Faced with major choices I know some things are never up for debate. I don’t have to wonder what I would do with a choice that would compromise what I believe; the answer is no compromise of who I am.

The tuff choices really aren’t that tuff when you decide up front that you believe and stand for what the Bible teaches. Not just about eternal life and salvation, but about eternal principles and values. Make a decision to stand for something this day and everyday and you will discover two things. First, you won’t feel crowded, a lot of people that you thought were close to you won’t be. Second, those who are still around in your life, when you look into their faces you will feel good about it, especially that person in the mirror!

Copyright 2007 © Charles Lyons

Plan on Your Prayers, Not Your Despair…

I am always amazed at people’s prayers. Too often they pray as though there was no connection between them and God. I recall the old story of the minister that called the people of a farming community to come to the church for a prayer meeting. Their purpose was to pray for God to send rain to end the long term drought they were experiencing. The preacher went to the platform and announced he was canceling the prayer meeting. When asked why, he explained that the congregation was not serious about praying for rain. After all no one had brought an umbrella.

In many ways that lack of trust in God is still going on. God says through Nahum 1:7, “The Lord is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him.” Yet, often people pray for an answer to paying a debt, or strength through an illness or joy in a relationship and then continue on as though nothing has or will happen. Why pray if you don’t believe in prayer, or worse, if you don’t believe in the one you are praying to?

I believe in God, better still, I believe He gets personally involved in our lives. I don’t always get the answer I asked for. However, I always get an answer. Sometimes yes, other times no, and often wait. That’s ok. I learned some time ago an important lesson, not only is God smarter than me, He loves me with a perfect love.

When someone loves you with a perfect love they don’t do everything you ask. They do everything that is in their power to help you grow, be comforted, and be more than you ever dreamed possible. God loves His children that much. That’s why the best description of how much He loves us is still found in John 3:16, “God so loved…”

Plan on God answering your prayers. Move forward knowing His best is the best. Remember that you don’t have reason to be in despair when your Father is the God who cares.

“We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed;” II Corinthians 4:8,9

Copyright 2007 © Charles Lyons

There is Sunshine Above The Clouds…

The day began with a phone call from a friend who was concerned for my safety. They had heard the reports on the weather channel of tornado warnings, severe rain and lightning in my area. In contrast I was oversleeping lulled by the gentle calming sound of rain coming down. OK, so one person’s storm is another person’s reason to oversleep.

The truth is we often cannot afford the luxury of sleeping in, yet we can always afford to trust in the protecting hand of our heavenly Father. Psalm 20:6-7 state that:

“Now know I that the LORD saveth his anointed; he will hear him from his holy heaven with the saving strength of his right hand. Some trust in chariots, and some in horses; but we will remember the name of the LORD our God.”

In my case this morning I was resting because of the soothing sound of the gentle rain unaware of the surrounding storms. However, for the child of God who leans on their LORD, we can be calm. We can be fully aware of the storms and still be fully at peace. We take safety precautions and use common sense, but that is not what we trust in. We trust in God knowing that regardless of the outcome, we are in His care, His provision and in His arms of love.

It really doesn’t matter how many storm clouds there are or how dark they turn. Just above the clouds the sun can still shine. Believing and trusting in Jesus Christ means the storms clouds can still come, but He will be with us regardless. Let others trust in chariots, horses and weather forecasts, but I chose to remember and trust in the name of the LORD our God.

Copyright 2007 © Charles Lyons
